El Paso Electric is now offering an appliance recycling program for New Mexico customers.
El Paso Electric contracts with ARCA, an appliance recycler, to pick up and recycle working refrigerators, freezers, and window A/C units that are no longer needed.
We will pick up your standard in-home refrigerator, freezer, or window A/C unit for free from inside your home. If you prefer a no-contact pickup, we can collect the appliance from outside of your home (patio, porch, or outside of garage). Program Details
- $50 rebate check per qualifying refrigerator and/or freezer or window A/C unit*
- Rebate check will be mailed within 4-6 weeks after appliance pickup.
- Appliance will be picked up at no charge from your El Paso Electric billing account address.
- Applicant must be an El Paso Electric New Mexico residential customer.
- Applicant must own the appliance.
- Refrigerators and freezers must be regular household size (10-30 cubic feet).
- Refrigerators and freezers must be in working (cooling) order, empty and clean.
- There is a limit of two refrigerators and/or freezers per customer address per calendar year.
- There is a limit of two window A/C units per customer address per calendar year.

* Miniature and commercial-sized refrigerators and freezers do not qualify. Any freezer must be a standalone unit. El Paso Electric reserves the right to revise program requirements and incentive levels at any time. Rebates are subject to availability.
How does recycling refrigerators and freezers impact the environment?
Chances are, the old, energy-sucking refrigerator or freezer in your home is increasing your electricity bill by an average of $150 a year. When you properly recycle it, you can reduce your energy use and keep harmful materials out of landfills.
- Each refrigerator recycled keeps over 150 lbs. of material out of the waste stream. Recycling also keeps ozone depleting substances from being released into the environment.
- Every ton of plastic recycled (approximately 80 fridges) saves 30 cubic yards of landfill space.
- Each ton of glass recycled saves 5 gallons of oil.
- Each ton of plastic recycled saves 16 barrels of oil.
- 95% of the material in refrigerators and freezers processed in a recycling facility is recycled, or, in the case of hazardous waste, is disposed of in a safe manner.
- Approximately 140 lbs. of metal are recovered per refrigerator recycled. Refrigerators contain several different kinds of metal such as light iron, steel, tin and copper.
- Metal recovered from refrigerators is shredded and melted down so it can be used again and again without much degradation. Recycled metals are used in new projects such as making parts for automobiles.
